RACHEL PHILLIPS
Rachel Phillips is an artist working primarily with the medium of painting. In her work, animated, cartoon-like figures express strong emotions and attitudes representing themes of everyday life and of our current times, playing off of each other in an often humorous yet disconcerting manner. Phillips’ characters are set against moody backgrounds that may either support or contradict the non-linear narratives of her imagery: not everything is as it seems. While the artist’s investigations of texture, abstraction, and/or color, provide connections among elements that otherwise do not intersect.
Phillip's works have appeared at solo and group exhibitions in the US and internationally including at Cindy Rucker Gallery, Walter Wickiser Gallery, Bruce High Quality Foundation, Galerie Protégé, Nurture Art, Chashama, and O’Flaherty’s in New York; Gran Sasso Science Institute, L’Aquila, Italy, and Salon Space, Berlin, Germany. She received “The Stephen Pace Residency for a Mid-Career Artist,” Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center in 2022, among other recent awards. Her work has been featured in Artnet, ArtMaze, Bedford & Bowery, Decorated Youth Magazine, Hyperallergic, Two Coats of Paint, and Talking Pictures, among others. She was one of the three artist curators of the critically recognized Bushwick gallery The Parlour (2011- 2017). Phillips received her BFA from Tyler School of Art Philadelphia, PA and a MFA from Memphis School of Art, Memphis TN. Rachel Phillips lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, and her work is represented by Microscope Gallery in New York.
